Dr. Siff was originally from Johannesburg, South Africa, where he received his PhD in physiology, specializing in biomechanics and his MSc in Applied Mathematics, specializing in brain research. He lectured in the Mechanical Engineering department at the University of Witwatersrand for many years before moving to the USA. He has presented numerous papers at many conferences in sports science, sports biomechanics, sports medicine, physiology, physical education, ergonomics, engineering, psychology, chiropractic, communication and linguistics. He has written many papers in these disciplines.

His expertise spanned biomechanics, applied physiology, and advanced strength training concepts such as explosive strength, power, plyometrics, and periodization, which he applied in both academic research and coaching Olympic-level weightlifting and other sports.
